Flossie Hatfield Smith
Of Gilbert, WV
Flossie Hatfield Smith, 78, of Gilbert, went to be with the Lord Saturday, January 8, 2011, from her home, after a long illness.
She was born January 18, 1932, at Gilbert, a daughter of the late Lloyd and Liddie Lockhart Hatfield.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruby, Susan, and Ruth; and one brother, Joseph.
Flossie graduated from Gilbert High School in 1949 and graduated from Concord College with a B. S. degree in Education. She was a retired teacher formerly employed with the Mingo County Board of Education at Gilbert Grade School for over 37 years. Flossie was a poet and author who wrote two books of poetry and co-authored several books about the Gilbert community. Using her writing ability, Flossie wrote many poems and stories upon request and enjoyed sharing her talent with others. She was a member of the Justice United Methodist Church for over 25 years, where she served her church as a former Sunday school teacher. Flossie enjoyed gardening and feeding and watching birds.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 54 years, Joe Smith of Gilbert; one daughter, Gretchen (Mark) Ryll of Greenville, SC; one son, Gavin Smith of Gilbert; one brother, Bobby Joe (Betsy) Stringer of Ashland, KY; one granddaughter, Stacy (Jarrod) Hatfield of Gilbert; two grandsons, Tyler Ryll of Greenville, SC and Paul Ryll of Columbia, SC; two great-grandchildren, Hayden and Emma Hatfield, both of Gilbert; a dear friend, Keith Carter of Gilbert; and several nieces and nephews along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at the First Missionary Baptist Church at Justice with the Rev. Diamond Carter and Rev. James Nagy officiating. Burial will follow in the Larkin- Hatfield Cemetery at Horse Pen.
Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the church and one hour prior to services.
Pall bearers will be Jarrod Hatfield, Tyler Ryll, Paul Ryll, Mark Thompson, Paul Edward Ball, and Teddy Morgan.
