Of Man, WV
Iris A. Sammons, 82, of Man, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 25, 2010, from her home after a long illness.
She was born March 28, 1928, at Davin, a daughter of the late George and Mary Brown Altizer.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Alice Cartte, Athleen Brooks, and Josephine Altizer; and four brothers, Garland Altizer, Joe Altizer, Robert Altizer, and George Altizer, Jr.
Iris was a member of the Claypool United Methodist Church where she was a former Sunday school teacher. She was a secretary who retired from Pittston Coal Company after many years of service. Previously she had been employed with Powellton Coal Company and Southern Public Service at Logan. Iris was a graduate of Man High School where she was the valedictorian of the class of 1946.
She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Arthur E. Sammons of Man; a special niece, Patty Brooks Roach and her husband, Jim, who took care of Iris’ needs for many years. Also left to cherish her memory are 17 nieces and nephews; her brother-in-law, John Sammons and his wife, Patty, of CA; and her sisters-in-law, Pat Sammons of Teays Valley and Hazel Altizer of Danville.
Iris was blessed to have devoted caregivers, Teresa Paynter, Della Johnson, Amber Clay, and Martha Osborne.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 28, 2010, at the Claypool United Methodist Church at Davin with Rev. Bryan C. Baker and her nephew, Rev. Ronald R. Brooks officiating. Burial will follow in Claypool Cemetery at Davin.
Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the Krantz-McNeely Funeral Home at Man and one hour prior to services.
Pall bearers will be Bill Cline, David Cochran, Emil Tomblin, Millard Tomblin, Jim Frye, and Orville Davis.
Krantz-McNeely Funeral Home at Man is in charge of the arrangements.
