Obituary of Lowell Wendell Hughes

Lowell Wendell Hughes, 73, of Avon Park, FL formerly of Man, WV departed this life January 5, 2023 at Advent Health Hospital Sebring, FL after a long illness. Lowell was born September 10, 1949 in Sutton, WV to the late Willow “KO” Hughes and Bernice Legg Hughes. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by the love of his life, Judy Hughes; two brothers, Eddie Hughes and Caramel Hughes; one brother-in-law Ken Solomon and one special great-granddaughter, Emmie Beth Hughes. He was a 1967 graduate from Man High school. He loved playing trumpet for the Man High marching band where he proudly lead them as the drum major. After graduation he began a career working in the mining industry. He worked several years in various roles within the industry leading to his retirement in 2015. After his retirement he continued to work in his community. He would pressure wash and paint neighbor’s homes. If you knew him, you knew he was always willing to help someone in need. He loved being outdoors especially fishing the Guyandotte river with friends, taking out of state family to explore the WV hills, gardening with his wife, and grilling huge meals for family get togethers. Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Shelley (Jeff) Carpenter of Salisbury, NC and Jessica Hopson of Avon Park, FL; one grandson, Adam Hughes of Columbus, OH and one granddaughter, Katie (Matt) Lowe of Man, WV; two brothers, Curtis (Karen) Hughes of Grove City, OH and Michael (Margo) Hughes of Globe AZ; two sisters, Carol Pierce (John Kabus) Cape Coral, FL; Pat Solomon of Brownstown, MI; sister-in-law Ann Hughes of Davin, WV; his 5 great grandchildren, Abi Lowe, Grace Belcher, Mattie Belcher, Haylee Hughes, and Gavin Hughes; and multiple in-laws and extended family members. A memorial ceremony will be planned at a later date. Just as Lowell requested he was cremated and reunited with his wife.
